Plan Reading: Special Systems

This Academy session teaches attendees how to read construction drawings related to low-voltage systems that support building operations, safety, and communication. These systems are increasingly critical in commercial buildings and often require coordination across trades.

Attendees will learn:

    • What is considered a special system

    • Fire alarm systems

    • Security systems (CCTV, card access, intrusion detection)

    • Data/telecom systems (structured cabling, fiber, server rooms)

    • Audio/visual systems (PA systems, digital signage, conference setups)

    • Building automation systems (BAS)

    • Nurse call, intercoms, and paging (in healthcare or education)

The Plan Reading series consists of these sessions:
  1. Overview and Introduction, 10/28/25
  2. Civil Plans, 11/18/25
  3. Structural Plans, 12/4/25
  4. Architectural Plans, 1/6/26
  5. Mechanical Plans, 1/27/26
  6. Plumbing Plans, 2/17/26
  7. Electrical Plans, 3/10/26
