Reading Special Systems Plans

This Special Systems Plan Reading Class teaches students how to read construction drawings related to low-voltage systems that support building operations, safety, and communication. These systems are increasingly critical in commercial buildings and often require coordination across trades.

Topics covered in this class include:

  • What is considered a special system?
  • Common systems covered:
    • Fire Alarm Systems
    • Security (CCTV, card access, intrusion detection)
    • Data/Telecom (structured cabling, fiber, server rooms)
    • Audio/Visual (PA systems, digital signage, conference setups)
    • Building Automation Systems (BAS)
    • Nurse call, intercoms, and paging (in healthcare or education)

  2. Civil Plans, 5/22
  3. Structural Plans, 6/5
  4. Architectural Plans, 6/18
  5. M&P Plans, 7/8
  6. Electrical Plans, 8/5
  7. Special Systems, 8/19

It is recommended to participate in the all Plan Reading classes for the more thorough introduction to plan reading.If attending via Zoom, you will miss some of the hands-on activities in the class.A Zoom link will be sent a few days prior to the sessions. Please keep your camera on for maximum engagement.
